Background
Research led by the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory has been integral to the development and implementation of Annual Health Checks for people with learning disabilities in Scotland. Working collaboratively with Scottish Government, NHS colleagues across primary care and wider health and social care partnerships, third sector organisations and people with lived experience, evidence generated by SLDO researchers has been instrumental in identifying the need for health checks, as well as developing, piloting and analysing the impact of health checks. In May 2022 the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory welcomed the Scottish Government’s commitment to implementing annual health checks within the community for all people aged 16 years or older. The Observatory plays a key role in the National Implementation Board. This work fits with our wider impact objective of developing, trialling and implementing interventions to improve the health (and healthcare) of people with learning disabilities.
Key evidence used to underpin the implementation of health checks includes our programme of research on Multimorbidity and Life Expectancy and Mortality. Search our website using those category headings to find out more about our research.
